Managing Cell Phone Use in Class

Updated: Jun 13, 2023

The age of technology has advanced society and education in such a way that both makes our access to information convenient and exciting; however, teachers experience difficulties with engaging students who are glued to their phones either on social media, texting, or playing video games. As if engaging students without the nuances of cell isn't difficult enough, here are a few ways to engage students in 2023.

  1. Create an unwavering expectation for cell phone use in class, and practice what you preach. Contrary to popular belief, students want structure and will often complain when teachers allow too many unstructured moments in class. If they understand that there is a clear plan for learning when they enter the room, they will become accustomed to those processes. You should also keep your cell tucked away during class.

  2. Invest in cell phone housing system. This can be a shoe storage bag that hangs in front of the room or a more sophisticated system such as Yondr Bags. Whatever you choose to implement, be sure to implement it with fidelity.

  3. Create structured times when students can use cell phones for research. Sometimes, computers are not available for classroom use and cell phones may be the only options. You'll need to carefully monitor students during this time or determine which students should retrieve his or her cell phones for group work. Perhaps you can allow cell phones to complete a bell ringer activity while setting the expectation that phones will be quickly housed afterwards.

  4. Try not to demonize cell phones and technology. Encourage students to see the benefits of cell phones while not allowing them to be a distraction. There is a time and a place for cell phone use and these ideas should be reinforced as much as needed.
